Malawi Chapter
SANOP Malawi Chapter
The Malawi Chapter of SANOP was established in March 2021 as a non-governmental organisation, with the ability to create its own governing structure. A Committee of the SANOP Malawi chapter was established in March 2021. The committee meets on quarterly basis to transact strategic business of the SANOP Malawi chapter while chapter members are the implementers.
Malawi Focus Areas
For the period 2020-2021, SANOP Malawi chapter focus areas would be:
- Establish ex-inmates’ regional associations;
-
- Establish two active associations in each region
- Members of each association were to establish rules and regulations to govern their associations
- Each association was to elect its leadership
- Association members would receive training in vocational, entrepreneurial, and business skills
- Association members were to police one another for smooth running of the associations
- Empower CSOs/NGOs working with inmates and/or ex inmates e.g. in monitoring and evaluation and capacity building
- Make more and deliberate efforts to intensify awareness activities in communities using mediums such as the radio
- Intensify publicity in prisons about the ex-inmate associations
- Identify gaps on issues of ex inmates and address them for effective survival of SANOP and ex-inmate associations
- Engage expertise to train inmates in different vocational and entrepreneurial skills. This would help inmates to see potential and value in the activities they were engaged in
- Intensify exchange visits by ex-inmates to prisons. This will be used as a tool to help inmates join the association after their sentences

Featured Projects
Malawi: Discrimination of Ex-prisoners Remains a Concern
In Malawi, there were many cases of prison status-related stigma and discrimination targeted at ex-prisoners being reported. Ex-prisoners would, upon release, be denied space in their communities because of the fear that their presence would endanger community peace and disturb the order.
SANOP’s Youth Entrepreneurship Drive
SANOP initiated the ‘Youth Entrepreneurship’ component under its programming, aimed at equipping the young offenders with business training and start viable small businesses as a sure way to reduce chances of reoffending.
