Re-integration of ex-prisoners

Re-integration of ex-prisoners

SANOP realizes that high standard prison systems not only ensure that human rights are respected โ€“ they also give prisoners a better opportunity to turn their lives around. In many prisons in Southern Africa, people suffer from overcrowding and poor conditions. Fostering rehabilitation, re-integration and resilience and providing alternatives to traditional sentencing can alleviate the pressure on the correctional services; and reduce marginalization and recidivism.

Our package of interventions doesnโ€™t end at the prison gates: we prepare inmates for their return to the community through skills and livelihoods training, alongside developing community groups of ex-offenders who provide ongoing support and referrals to relevant services.

One of the main challenges is prisoners who revert to a life of crime after their release from prison. SANOP believes special attention is needed for the reintegration of former prisoners into society. Initiatives aimed at reforming, reintegrating and building the resilience of former prisoners strengthens their ability to live a normal life
