Sexual Reproductive Health Training of juveniles and youths

Prison systems in SANOP countries struggle to provide even the most basic health care services, including SRH services for people in prison. The reasons are many, but they include limited resources, non-prioritisation of the rights of prisoners when it comes to sexual and reproductive health, lack of knowledge or willingness to apply SRHR from custodians of prisoners and from the prisoners themselves. SANOP prioritised provision of SHR services in and out prison system by integrating SRH training and information sessions throughout its activities.

In Zambia, Sexual Reproductive Health Training, Leadership and Life skills Training and Business and Entrepreneurship Training sessions were conducted for ex-inmates’ groups in Petauke and Samfya and at Katombora and Nakambala juvenile correctional centres. Over 120 young people benefited directly or indirectly through the trainings, or engagements undertaken afterwards. The youths were able to conduct trainings for other young people as well as sensitise community leaders and members.

Similarly, SANOP facilitated another SRHR training for inmates and ex-inmates which took place at Insakwe Approved Correctional School in May 2021. This training, attended by 17 girls, was important as it provided the participants with information related to sexual reproductive health and rights and equip adolescents with information on SRHR to be able to make informed choices regarding their sexual health and that of their partners.

In Zimbabwe, SANOP facilitated SRHR training for inmates at Whawha Young Offenders Prison in Midlands. The training was a platform for inmates and the facilitators to share experiences about how they overcame some of the health challenges they faced during incarceration and even after serving their jail terms, and how they should manage such challenges in future. The training was also a platform to provide inmates with SRHR information, very useful in their health life.
